Bridport Hat Festival

Sorry for the absence we have been on holiday. We returned home on Friday so it gave us the chance to attend Bridport Hat Festival yesterday.

The hat festival is an annual event that has taken place in Bridport over the past 4 years. There is an amazing hat shop in Bridport called Snooks  selling all types of hats. It was the owners idea to have a day were everyone wears hats and celebrates hat wearing within the town. It has become more popular each year.

Even the band join in the fun!

 There were some amazing creations.

It was such fun to see everyone joining in with big smiles on  their faces. We were watching films last week about Britain in the 1950's and it was noticeable how many people were wearing hats all the time, whatever their occupation. I remember my parents and grandparents often wearing hats. I won't mention the uncomfortable boater I had to wear for school in the summer! Of course we joined in although we weren't very imaginative. My husband wore his Van Morrison hat and I had my canvas hat that I decorated with daises and the brooch of the West Highland terrier that Emma made me. One of my followers Heather that often comments here also attended, sadly we didn't see each other. Daisy declined to attend she doesn't like wearing hats and wanted a rest after her holiday! There were however many dogs that took part, so maybe we can persuade her next year!

Do you have any stories of hats to tell?
Wishing you a happy week, it's going to be hard going back to work tomorrow after a weeks holiday, but next time I will tell you all about the holiday.

  1. Sounds like fun. I think hats are wonderful. Too bad we do not wear them more. I do wear a hat in the garden. I have a nicer summer hat that I wear if I'm going to be out in the sun. Good to hear that you had a nice day.
    Blessings,

  3. OH I LOVE HATS SARAH! That is you in the photos? You are lovely! And I thought that was Daisy....but of course the canines must participate! We have a dog festival here called, WOOFSTOCK! and the dogs get all decked out in hats and costumes. On Halloween, we go to a rabbit party called HOPPY HOUR; this year they are dressing up the rabbits! One must keep themselves amused.

    HAVE FUN! Anita

  5. Isn't it great that new traditions are born, especially such lovely ones as this! I have a dozen or so felt hats I used to wear in winter in the 1990s and I've been planning to revive that habit for a couple of winters now without success. Perhaps when I turn 60 I will become a lady and never leave the house without a proper hat of some sort. Or 70, that is the ultimate limit!

  6. What a wonderful new tradition and what fun. I love hats and it must be great to see all these people wearing them. I sometimes miss the olden days that people used to wear hats most of the times.
    Have a nice week

  7. What a fun event. I would love to have taken part, I have lots of hats-mostly winter ones and now two summer hats. I have a straw cowboy hat, which I decorated with lavender from the garden. I have worn it so many times on all our holidays so it reminds me of all those lovely times.

    2. Hi Sarah
gosh time does goes so quick, you might like the Eype event on 24th November, we have moved the venue to Highlands End Holiday Park (where you park your car) it is a much bigger venue, so more stalls and somewhere to have a nice sit down and coffee and warmer and more comfortable. Also we are doing a Autumn Craft Fair at the Donkey sanctuary on the 13th October, cant wait for that one!

    1. What a shame you didn't find a car parking space. We parked and walked in, I think they were doing park and ride from West Bay it might be worth trying that if you try next year.

  13. What an amazing festival! Very colourful and must have been great fun. I've never heard of a hat festival before. I used to hate hats, perhaps because I always had to wear one to church when I was young. But when our 2 daughters were married I wore a hat each time and absolutely loved them.

  15. Bridport is a fabulous town I love it. And what a great idea to have a hat day- some of those creations were amazing. I wear hats all the time in winter. There used to be a brilliant milliners shop in Lyme which was sadly closing down the last time I went. We used to go every Spring and I always came back with a new hat!

  22. What a wonderful idea! I hope it goes from strength to strength. I don't wear hats, but when I was a student I had a big floppy straw hat that made me look like a mushroom...
    All the best :)

What fun your hat festival would be and was great to see your photo, you look lovely in yours.
My mother went to a millinery night class and made herself a few hats that we always used to love dressing up in.

  25. Just back from Dorset!! Hat Festival was FAB!! Have to agree about the parking though!! We toured a couple of 'full' car parks and in the end Hubby dropped us off and came back later for us!!I do think he was very relieved though, as it's not his 'thing' at all!!! Everyone chats and it is just a wonderful atmosphere, thoroughly recommend it!!!! Roll on next year!!
