Lyme Regis in the sunshine

As I write it is pouring with rain yet again, but last Saturday the sun did make an appearance and on our way back from dropping our son off in Devon we popped into Lyme Regis to have a ice-cream on the beach.

Lyme Regis is one of the jewels on the Dorset coast and deserves more than a fleeting visit. Tony who wrote a great poem about West Bay in one of my previous posts reminded me recently that I hadn't covered Lyme Regis. so I hope this will make so amends until I have more time to do it justice.

Lyme Regis has some amazing gardens with views down to the sea. It is famous for its old harbour known as the Cobb.

The Cobb has been featured in novels. Jane Austin visited the town twice and her last novel Persuasion is partly based here. That reminds me that I haven't read it for years and I must re-read it again!

The Cobb was also included in the book and film of The French Lieutenant's Woman by John Fowles. The harbour didn't look as grim and foreboding as the film, although the waves were crashing over part of the wall even on sunny day like this.

You can walk along the wall, although it slopes down slightly. It always makes me scared when I see children walking along it - especially when the waves are high! You can see my husband and Daisy didn't follow me!

We enjoyed a wonderful ice cream in a cornet, the first this year, while admiring the view!

This bird was so friendly we had to take a picture of it!

Glimpses of the sea can be seen from other parts of the town. ( By the way this time the white dog isn't Daisy. )

There is a great deal more to add about Lyme Regis, but it will have to wait until another day! In the meantime I hope you find some sunshine or dry weather this weekend. We are off to a folk concert in the local subtropical gardens. When we booked the tickets in March we dreamt of the event taking place on a hot summers day!

Welcome to my new followers Lyn, Grah, Rosemary, and Thea, it's wonderful to have your company too.
Tony, if you have any other poems about Dorset I would love to see them.

Ooh Sara, I love Lyme Regis (hubby not quite so keen, unless he is walking from Lyme to Charmouth fossil hunting) but I love it, I love the streets and the way you can see a glimpse of the sea, just like your photos, which are fantanstic as usual, hope you enjoy our concert in all this rain. 11. Wow look at all that blue sky! Lyme Regis is a place I've heard lots about but haven't visited. I read persuasion last year and I read 'remarkable creatures' too - the story of Mary Anning, which was also set in Lyme Regis. I enjoyed seeing it in your photos and look forward to a proper 'visit' sometime!

    1. I haven't had the book about Mary Anning so will have to see if there is a copy at the library. Fossils will feature on the next visit to Lyme!

  13. Hi Sarah,. . . I had a great 4th of July and thank you for asking. I spent mine with my daughter and granddaughters and it was a delight. Your photos are wonderful. I enjoy traveling, through my lovely blogging friend's photography. You asked about Butchy and what breed he is. You may not like my answer . . . because Butchy is a mutt. He has miniature poodle and who knows what else. He is a very sweet little dog, and is our baby. Have a great day and thank you for popping in and visiting. My welcome mat is always out. Connie :)

  20. Gosh this took me back! Growing up in Somerset Lyme Regis was a day trip away and a favourite with my Mum. Years since I've been there though.

  23. Hi Sarah, I know that I have already commented on this post, but I enjoyed it just as much the second time around. You live in such a beautiful part of the world.
Thanks for popping in for a visit, I just adore company. Yes, the Sister's on the Fly are really into dolling their little trailers up. Doesn't it just make you wish you had one. It sure makes me feel that way. Have a lovely day, Connie :)

  24. Dear Sarah,

I can remember both films in which Lyme is featured. Persuasion with Ann Eliott and captain Wentworth being my favourite :-)! You captured it wonderfully. I especially like the photographs on which you see part of the garden an view of the sea, with the sunlight shining on it!

    Happy new week,
